Why Your Business Needs a Website in 2026 (Yes, Even With Social Media)

Your Instagram followers belong to Meta, not you. Here's why every business still needs a website in 2026—and what it actually needs to have.

"I just use Instagram for my business"

I hear this weekly. Usually from small business owners who are doing well on social media and don't see the point of a website.

I get it. Social media is free, it works, and customers find you there. So why spend money on a website?

Here's why.

You don't own your social media

In 2024, TikTok was almost banned in the US. In 2023, Meta threatened to pull Facebook and Instagram from Europe. In 2022, Twitter (now X) changed overnight and thousands of businesses lost their verified status and reach.

Your Instagram followers? Those are Meta's followers. They decide who sees your posts. They can change the algorithm, ban your account, or shut down tomorrow.

Your website is yours. Your domain. Your content. Your data. Nobody can take it away.

Social media is rented land

Think of it this way:

  • Social media = renting an apartment. You can decorate, but the landlord makes the rules.
  • A website = owning your house. You control everything.

The Google factor

When someone needs a plumber at 10pm, they don't open Instagram. They Google "plumber near me."

Many local buying decisions start with a Google search. If you don't have a website, you don't show up. Your competitor who does have a website gets the call.

What a website does that social media can't

1. You appear in Google searches. Social media profiles sometimes show up, but a proper website with SEO will rank for dozens of keywords.

2. You look legitimate. Many people judge a business's credibility by its website. No website? Some customers assume you're not a real business.

3. You control the customer journey. On Instagram, you're one swipe away from a competitor's ad. On your website, the only content is yours. No distractions.

4. You collect leads on your terms. A contact form on your website sends leads directly to your inbox. A DM on Instagram is mixed in with spam and gets lost.

5. You can sell 24/7. Your website takes orders, books appointments, and answers FAQs while you sleep. Social media requires you to be online.

What your website actually needs

Not a 50-page corporate site. Most small businesses need:

  1. Homepage - What you do, who you serve, why you're different
  2. Services/Products page - What you offer and what it costs
  3. About page - Your story, your team, your credentials
  4. Contact page - Phone, email, form, location/hours
  5. Reviews/Testimonials - Social proof from real customers

That's it. Five pages. Clean design. Mobile-friendly. Fast loading.

But what does it cost?

A professional small business website is a real investment (our current prices are on the pricing page). That sounds like a lot until you consider:

  • A single new customer from Google might be worth $500-5,000
  • The website works 24/7 for years
  • It builds equity (social media content disappears into the feed)

The best approach: website + social media

This isn't either/or. It's both. Use social media to build awareness and community. Use your website to convert visitors into customers.

Post on Instagram → Drive traffic to your website → Capture leads → Follow up → Close the sale.

Social media is the top of the funnel. Your website is where the sale happens.
