Found by the people closest to you
The map pack takes the top of the page for almost every local search, and most of what decides who appears there is free to fix. We do the work that moves it — profile, citations, local pages and reviews — and tell you plainly which parts you can do yourself.
You are invisible three towns over
Local ranking is largely a function of proximity, relevance and prominence. Proximity you cannot change. The other two are mostly administrative work nobody got round to: a half-finished profile, an address written four different ways across the web, and no page on your site that names the town a customer is searching from.
- You appear in the map pack in your own town and nowhere else
- Your Google Business Profile has no categories set beyond the default one
- Your address or phone number is written differently on Yelp, Facebook and your own site
- There is no page on your site naming the towns you actually serve
- You have a handful of reviews and no system for asking for more
- Competitors with worse websites outrank you locally, which feels inexplicable
What actually moves local rankings
In rough order of impact. The first item is free and you can do it yourself — we would rather tell you that than sell you a retainer for it.
Google Business Profile, done properly
Primary and secondary categories, service areas, services list, hours, attributes, and real photographs. This is the single biggest lever in local search and it costs nothing but attention. If you only ever do one thing from this page, do this one.
Citation consistency
Your name, address and phone number written identically across the directories that matter — Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB, industry bodies. Inconsistency here quietly suppresses confidence in which listing is real.
Location pages that say something
A page per town you genuinely serve, with real detail about working there — not the same paragraph with the town name swapped, which Google has recognised and discounted for years.
A review process, not a review push
A repeatable way to ask at the moment a customer is happiest, and a habit of responding to every review. Steady reviews over time read as real; twelve arriving in one week do not.
Local structured data
LocalBusiness markup with your address, geo coordinates, opening hours and service areas, so search engines and AI assistants can state where you are without guessing.
Measurement that means something
Calls, direction requests and profile views from the map, tracked over time. Ranking screenshots vary by who is holding the phone and where they are standing; enquiries do not.
Who local SEO suits
Businesses customers travel to
Restaurants, salons, dental and medical practices, studios — anywhere the map pack and direction requests are how people find the door.
Service-area businesses
Trades, home services and contractors who work at the customer's address rather than their own. The profile is set up differently for these, and it is frequently set up wrong.
Multi-town service businesses
If you serve eight towns and rank in one, the gap is usually pages and citations rather than anything technical.
Practices competing on trust
Legal, accounting, healthcare — categories where the review profile does as much work as the ranking does.
How local work runs
Local SEO is less about clever technique and more about doing unglamorous things consistently. The sequence matters more than the effort.
Audit the profile and the citations
What your Google Business Profile currently says, where your details disagree across the web, and which competitors hold the map pack for the searches you care about.
Fix the profile first
Categories, services, service areas, hours and photographs. This is where the largest movement usually comes from and it comes fastest.
Correct the citations
One canonical version of your name, address and phone, applied everywhere it appears, and duplicates claimed or removed.
Build the local pages
Real pages for the places you serve, linked properly from the site, with local structured data attached.
Establish the review habit
A process your team can actually run without being reminded, plus responses to what comes in.
Measure calls, not screenshots
Monthly reporting against calls and direction requests, so you can see whether any of it produced work.
What it costs
Local SEO is scoped work with a defined end, not an open-ended monthly retainer. Much of the first phase is one-time cleanup that stays fixed once it is done.
- The initial local review is free and the findings are yours regardless
- Profile and citation cleanup is one-time work, quoted up front
- Location pages are quoted per page, so you choose how many
- Ongoing work is optional and only recommended where there is something to do
- No contract locking you into monthly fees for maintenance that is finished
Questions about local search
- Do I need a physical address to rank locally?
- Not necessarily. Google supports service-area businesses that travel to customers and lets you hide the street address while still defining the towns you cover. It is set up differently from a storefront listing, and getting that distinction wrong is one of the more common reasons a service business fails to appear at all.
- How long does local SEO take to work?
- Profile changes can move things within days to a few weeks, which makes local the fastest-moving part of SEO. Citation cleanup and new location pages typically show over one to three months. Anyone quoting a specific date is guessing.
- Can I just do this myself?
- A good deal of it, yes, and we will say so. The Google Business Profile is free and the highest-impact item on this page. If you have the time to work through categories, services, photos and a review habit, do it — you will get most of the benefit. Hire someone when the citation cleanup, the location pages and the structured data are more work than you want to take on.
- Why do competitors with worse websites outrank me?
- Because local ranking is not mostly about your website. Proximity to the searcher, a complete and active Google Business Profile, review volume and consistent citations do most of the work. A beautiful site with a neglected profile loses to a plain site with a well-kept one, reliably.
- Do you guarantee a place in the map pack?
- No. The map pack shows three results and they change with where the searcher is standing, so nobody can guarantee a position — and a guarantee is a reason to be suspicious of whoever offered it. What we can do is fix every factor that is within your control and show you the calls before and after.
- What if I serve towns I am not physically in?
- That is normal and it is what service areas are for. You define the towns you cover in the profile, and we build genuine pages for the ones that matter commercially. What does not work is claiming a fake address in each town — Google detects it and the penalty is worse than the invisibility you started with.
