Why Your Website Doesn't Show Up on Google (And It's Not What You Think)

Your website isn't showing up on Google. But probably not for the reason you think. Here's what actually matters in 2026.

"We're not on Google" - I hear this weekly

Client calls: "We googled our business name and we're not there. Can you fix our SEO?"

I check. They're on page 1. Position 2.

The problem? They wanted position 1. For a keyword nobody searches.

The real SEO problem most businesses have

It's not technical. Your sitemap is probably fine. Your site speed is good enough.

The problem: You're trying to rank for words people don't search.

Example: The HVAC company

A typical request: rank #1 for "HVAC services New Jersey."

I asked: "When's the last time someone called and said 'I need HVAC services'?"

Never. They say "my AC is broken" or "how much to install heat?"

So we optimized for:

  • "AC repair Sparta NJ"
  • "furnace installation cost"
  • "emergency heat repair near me"

Those are the searches that turn into phone calls, because they match what people actually type when something is broken.

What actually works

1. Answer the questions people ask

Not "Our comprehensive HVAC solutions."

Write "How much does it cost to replace a furnace in NJ?" Then answer it. With numbers. From your actual business.

2. Show up in your town

Google "pizza near me" right now. See how it shows you actual pizza places? That's Google My Business.

If yours isn't claimed, verified, and updated, you're invisible.

3. Get reviews (the right way)

After every job, text your client:
"Thanks for trusting us with your AC repair. If we did good work, would you mind leaving a quick Google review? Here's the link: [direct link]"

Don't ask in person. Don't email. Text. With a direct link. You'll get 10x more reviews.

4. Make your site not suck on phones

Many "near me" searches happen on phones. If your site requires zooming and pinching, Google ranks you lower.

The one-week SEO audit

Day 1: Google your business name. Are you there? Good.

Day 2: Google "[your service] near me" on your phone. Are you in the top 3? No? That's your problem.

Day 3: Check Google My Business. Is your info correct? Do you have photos? Reviews?

Day 4: Read your homepage. Does it sound like a human wrote it or a robot? Rewrite the robot parts.

Day 5: Make a list of 10 questions customers actually ask. Write blog posts answering each one.

Day 6-7: Rest. SEO takes time.

When to actually worry about technical SEO

  • Your site takes 10+ seconds to load
  • Pages have errors (404s, broken links)
  • You're not on HTTPS (the padlock in the browser)
  • Your site looks broken on phones

If none of those apply, your problem isn't technical. It's content.

What we do differently

We don't sell "SEO packages." We write content that actually answers questions your customers ask.

Real examples from your business. Specific prices (ranges are fine). Local references.

Then we make sure Google can find it.

Not sexy. But it works.
